You might try using VideoLan: http://www.videolan.org/

It is not a fancy player, but manages to handle many files that other
players have difficulty with. In addition to a player, you need appropriate
codecs to play the different video formats. Try starting with VideoLan and
also look into DivX and XviD.

For myself, I usually use Nero Showtime, but I don't think they have a free
player. Mostly I use it because I am used to it!
