  I believe the problem is that Microsoft Works uses the .DOC file extension 
for its documents, but they are not in the .DOC file format that modern 
versions of MS Word understand.
  If she is going to be sharing these files with othersm perhaps she could 
save them with the .WRI extension instead?
  (Another solution might be to migrate from Works to Open Office, which is 
compatible with Office (including Word) and is free.)
