Microsoft has a Product Key Update Tool for that purpose. Even though this
is a simple procedure, as with any changes to the operating system where
there's a chance of something going wrong, insure you have adequate backups
of all important and personal data. An image backup to DVD or an external
hard drive of the system drive (the one with Windows) would be ideal for
this purpose. As a minimum, Microsoft recommends you create a System Restore
Point prior to using the tool. You will need your new product key available
when you begin.

There are also several programs available on the Internet that has the
ability to change the product key. Probably the easiest to use is one called
Magical Jelly Bean Keyfinder. It uses scripts provided by Microsoft to
change the key. You can get it here:

I discovered that my Windows XP was not a legitimate copy. I purchased
a new copy and am wondering if I need to uninstall my existing copy
before loading the new one. I am afraid of losing everything. Can
anyone help me?
