Trouble then is that you'll lose all restore points, which may make the
exercise rather counter-productive.

Unfortunately, when advice is given to disable System Restore, it often
omits to warn of this somewhat disastrous consequence.

Unless, of course, any restore point was made which includes the virus. In
that case, Sytem Restore is likely to be useless anyway unless you can
determine which date the virus entered your system.

Far better to download and update a decent a-v system such as AVG or Avast
(both if you're paranoiac, but only run one at a time).

On-line checks seem to load a lot of mysterious stuff onto your hard drive
anyway before they can proceed. I'd only use them as a last resort.
