Harlen Linke,
You are correct in saying that it is important to keep your virus
definitions updated. That's why I like Norton Antivirus 2001. It
automatically updates my definitions without me having to run the Live
Update all the time. However, this does not mean that you will be protected
from a virus that is released the day after if it is something completely
new and your AV program does not have a definition for it yet. So it makes
no difference if you are completely updated or if you buy the latest version
of your favorite AV program, because when you install the new version you
are only going to get the latest definitions anyway. And sometimes it is
good to buy the new version because it may offer new features that the old
version didn't have.
