John,

There are hidden files that MS saves and cannot be removed through the W95
interface, only through MS-DOS. You can read about this at
http://netsecurity.about.com/library/weekly/aa020402a.htm and don't be
surprised if this clears up lots of space assuming you've never cleaned
these out before.

The size of your swap file is a factor too. Many recommend you set up a
static swap file rather than let Windows manage it. Enabling DMA for your
IDE HD, running defrag frequently are also good ideas.

Definitely do as you are removing any applications you no longer need. And
be aware that eventually a Windows box gets cluttered and will improved
vastly by formatting the HD and reinstalling Windows from scratch. It's a
lot of work, especially the first time you do this but is usually a good
thing to do after a long enough period of time has passed. You may also
want to consider upgrading memory;
http://face2interface.com/MYD/Basic_Information/PC_Maintenance.shtml is an
article I wrote that talks a little bit about some of the simple
maintenance things you can do.

hth,

Marty
