Jim,

It sounds like your document/file has become Word's default template (which
is what Word uses to set the initial formatting on a new document). This
could have happened inadvertently (and you didn't notice the pop-up
messages Word should have displayed when making changes to a template or
changing from the default template to another) or, possibly, because of a
Word-specific virus.

The default template Word should be using is normal.dot - and normal.dot
should be a blank page.

The easiest way to correct the problem would be to create a blank page
document (formatted the way you like to have your default documents
formatted in terms of page size, margins, font etc) and use "save as" to
save it. During "save as" you will get the option to save it not as a
document but as a template (templates end with .dot instead of .doc). Try
saving the blank page as a template which is called "normal.dot" and after
doing that, close Word and re-start it. After the save-exit-restart, Word
should display a blank page for a new document.

However, it's worrying that you do not get the save-changes question when
trying to save an edited Document 1. It could mean that there is a virus
which has attacked your copy of Word and it is infected. This may require a
Word re-installation with, of course, a thorough anti-virus scan in between
removal and re-installation.

Try the normal.dot template change and let's see what happens.

Good luck - = Cheeta Gauba [log in to unmask]
