Rick,
I would do the following
1. Go to start/programs/ and scroll down the list looking for an ICQ entry.
If so then point the mouse over the ICQ entry and you will see a caption
UNINSTALL ICQ>
2. If that isn't there then do a cntrl/alt/delete and look for the name of
the string initiating this request.Do a find on this executable to locate
the actual path. Chances are it is embedded in Sysedit /autoexec.bat or
config.sys.
If no reference to this can be found then do the next step.
2.Go to start/run/type msconfig and the configuration util will appear if it
was selected during the actual Windows install from the original cd. At this
point have your friend click on the startup tab and see if there is any
reference to ICQ. If so then disable it from there.
Problem solved.
3. The absolute last resort would be to download a fresh copy of ICQ and
install it then go to control panel/add remove programs/ select ICQ and then
select remove all components. This should wipe out all traces of this
program in the computer's registry as well.
