I've haven't been able to hear any sounds in Media Player 2.
This "Error Box" comes up when a file (AVI in this case) is loaded:

Windows Media Player Error
X Cannot play back the audio stream: no audio
    hardware is available.

The Details shows the same message but with (Error=00040258)

Now I do hears other sounds (Close Windows, Start Windows, Exit Windows, etc)
but not from the Media Player. The box in my Multimedia properties is checked
for using the preferred devices for recording and playback.
