Thanks, Don; I wish there were any such option!  I've tried about 
everything in the T'bird menu and can't find it.  Went to Mozilla Help 
and can't really find anything there either.  It'd take me a week!

I didn't spot anything in MSCONFIG relating specifically to T'bird; 
would that be in the update scheduler somewhere?

One other option may be to download the update to my laptop -- but it is 
a 64-bit machine running W7 and past experience has taught me that this 
32-bit machine (XP) is not compatible.  I can't "read" _any_ kind of 
memory created on the laptop here:  not a CD, not a DVD, and not a USB 
memory stick.  I guess the speeds don't match?  Is there a way around 
that?  Thanks again...
