On the older laptops, if you choose anything other than the max resolution
of the LCD display, what you describe is the result.  Some laptops have
special display drivers not included with the standard Windows 98 (and
maybe other versions) that allow the stretching of the display by
approximating the pixel resolution to fill the entire screen.  The ones
I've seen on the older laptops with the "stretched" display was less than
satisfactory.  If your version of Windows 98 did not come with the laptop,
it probably does not have this LCD display "stretching" driver.
