Motherboard Monitor does the job pretty good in W98 - I assume it'll work in XP.  I can't give you a link right now as Google seems to be down but do a search for 'Motherboard Monitor' to get it.

I used to install it on every PC I built until I started using motherboards with inbuilt monitoring.

If you get MM and want help configuring it, mail me.  It's not really complex but, being a freebie, it could do with a bit more help to set up.
