I recently also got Red Hat 5.2. It comes with a boot manager called LILO. It
let me repartition my existing Win95 drive quite easily with no disturbance
to my existing Win95, apps, or files. When the computer starts, it comes to a
LILO prompt that lets me select whether to boot Linux or Win95. Linux itself
installed pretty easily, by the way. I don't think you will be over your head.
