A likely problem is the autoexec.bat is erased. Check if c:\autoexec.bat
exists, and does it have a line like
path=c:\windows;c:\windows\command
the command folder contains scandisk.exe
Some systems run just fine without an autoexec.bat or config.sys file, but I
can't vouch for every version of windows, your version may need it.

Hi, all. I have a problem I've not seen mentioned before. When I have to
reboot and therefore don't shut Windows properly, it always automatically
goes into the short scan disk when I "hit any key." Or rather it did until
a couple of days ago. Now I get a screen saying it can't find scandisk.exe,
but I can continue to load Windows by hitting any key. So I do and then I
run scan disk from system tools. Scan disk (thorough), by the way, finds no
errors. So how do I get things back to normal? Running Win95. TIA, Paula
