To enable Excel to "translate" your shift codes into hours 
I think you will have to have an extra row or column to 
coincide with your list of codes. This could be hidden or 
well away from your daily codes.

You could do the job with "nested If's" but these can be a 
pain to set up. I would use VLOOKUP(). 

Have a named range where your codes and their value are 
listed and then refer to this range.  In the following 
example from a sample workbook I have just tried
 =VLOOKUP(B6,shiftcode,2,FALSE)

It is much easier to explain in an Excel workbook itself 
which I would be happy to send direct to you and anyone 
else who is interested.
