Hi Michael,
You could stop the show and take a screenshot of it.
or
Try PowerPoint Image Extractor from Alain LeComte -
http://alainlecomte.free.fr/Download.htm#PPImageExtractor
It not only extracts the images but also the audio to a folder in My Documents.
R-click the screen and "print" the file, but print it "To File" .
you'll get the option to "print" 1 or all of the pictures.
You can even "print"to PDF and extract the picture(s) from there,so long as the file
is not protected.
I've been successful using PDF Xchange Viewer from Docu-Trac
http://www.docu-track.com/home/prod_user/PDF-XChange_Tools/pdfx_viewer/
Of course it's simpler if you have MS PowerPoint but, considering your question,
I take it you don't.

Is there a way to capture a picture from a Power Point show that was sent to me by a
friend?
