As I said before, I'm a big fan of a freeware firewall called
ZoneAlarm.  It won't prevent spyware from installing on your system,
but it will keep it from either transmitting information or
downloading information from its home site unless you give explicit
permission.  It will also give you enough information so that you can
track down the app which is doing the spying and uninstall it
yourself.

They emphasize its importance for cable users, who have bigger
security problems, but IMHO, almost everyone should have a firewall,
as long as he can get it for free.
