Hi Maurice,
Excel knows nothing about stones and pounds. The entry of 12.5 would simply
be a method of notation, where the fraction is a number that represents
pounds and the whole number represents stones. The problem in this notation
is for the value of 10 pounds. This would be notated as 12.10, but in Excel
the value of 12.1 and 12.10 are the same. Russ did point out the you could
use this notation by making the cell a TEXT cell rather than numeric.

Maybe I'm missing something since math was not part of my climb to
scholastic greatness, (come to think of it no subject was), but I am of the
opinion that the 12 (stones).5(pounds) example will never work since we are
trying to fractionalize apples (stones) and oranges (pounds). I believe that
the .5 should be .3571 (the value of 5 pounds translated into its equivalent
value in stones. Then the formula will work. (I think)
