I also found it hard to stop a print job on my printers.  With all the processes they go thru, it's hard to stop in the middle.  What I do is simply remove the paper from the tray and when I get a message the printer is out of paper, I click on the printer icon, which opens a box that shows the print job line up.  I highlight that print job then hit cancel.  That will take care of it in a minute or two without having to pull the plug (which doesn't seem like it would be good for the printer).
