To anyone else following this string, I do my best not to lead anyone astray, so if any of this
seems like bad advice, please speak up now!

Jim,

Since you're getting the same error messages with both hard drives, I think there's more going on
here than just OS missing file problems. Do not use your recovery disk - that will, in my opinion,
complicate matters even further. At this point, I think you're on the right track replacing the
battery. Rick seems to be onto something hardware related, and Doug as well suspects loose
connectors/cables etc., and I agree with both of them. However, if this is hardware-related, and
even if this was coincidental, missing OS files are still going to be an issue eventually, and I
think we'll need to cross that bridge when we get there. I think the best thing to do at this point
is carefully reseat any and all cards, connectors and cables, then boot up and see what happens. Be
sure to disconnect the power to the PC before attempting any work inside the case, and ensure you
touch the metal case to discharge any static electricity - use a ground strap if you have one. Let
us know if this helps at all, but if not, it may be time to ask the gurus on the PCBUILD list.
