Alex, I haven't used Word 6/8 for a while but if I remember it is similar
to the way you do it in Word 97.

Most important you must insert a Section Break at the point where you want
to start the page numbering.  Then you format your headers and footers with
the page numbering while your cursor is in the second Section.  **Make sure
that the option "Same as Previous Section" is *Not* selected on the header
tool bar.**
