The easiest way to test your e-mail scanning is to have
someone you know and trust (even yourself) do the following.

Get the Eicar test file (or make one) from the info at:
http://www.eicar.org/anti_virus_test_file.htm
and send it (or have it sent) to your e-mail account.

You might have to change some settings in your real-time scanning
and scanning of outgoing messages to be able to try this...
(If you don't need to change something to get this to work, something
else "much worse" is wrong...)

They explain on that site this is a standard, perfectly safe test file
that is specifically for testing the functionality of the AV scanner
in various ways. It was made for exactly what you want to do...

Note that some ISP scan your e-mail for you so this test " might"
fail if they are scanning "for you"...
(I would never trust them to scan for me as my only defense BTW...)
