I grew up on text programming where a column mode editor
was the standard and my move to the windows and PC
environment sent me on a search for a comparable editor
several years ago.  I still download MVS files and need to
clean them up in a block ASCII editor.

The program that is hands down the best for this type
editing is UltraEdit.  You can do column edits and inserts
and then switch back to standard text mode editing.  It is
shareware so you can try it before buying.  Check it out
