Folks, if I may add my few cents to this thread:
I've been doing a bit of work lately with spyware protectives and I've found this method to be pretty good.
Install Spybot Search and Destroy. Update it on the net. Run it and annihilate anything it finds.
Then put it aside. It's a great initial cleaner but I don't think it's a great runner - I've seen stuff get past it.
Now install Spyware Blaster 2.6.1 and Spyware Guard 2.2.
Update and run both apps and you should be (and stay) pretty clean.
Note: If it's a new system, don't bother about SpyBot - it's best use is as a Terminator for existing problems and a new system shouldn't have any.

Subject: Re: [PCSOFT] How do I get rid of Alexa "Spyware"
Juanita,
I have not encountered any case where "AdAware won't work until you update
and D\L Alexa again." Alexa was known to be a decent software company but
their name I believed was smeared bad during the release of Internet
Explorer 6 Service Pack upgrade. If my memory serves me right, the "Alexa"
entry after installing the IE6 service pack was to support the IE's Tool
menu to "Show Related Links." If you delete the "Alexa" entry from your
IE6, it will remove the search engine and deletes the "Show Related Links"
from the menu. And then, there was the controversy over IE6 and Alexa over
this "Spyware" issue. Alexa since then earned the reputation as "one of the
worst spywares" known. For more info, click on this link...
