I found the free program DriveImage XML to do an excellent job of making HD
copies. Acronis TrueImage is also a good product, but it is not free unless
you use a Western Digital HD and then it is available for free from the WD
website.

This version of Acronis True Image works only with a WD HD present.

I know I can drop / drag files from each computer to a designated folder on
the ext HD but that is time consuming and leads to errors. I think a Windows
backup image copies everything, including the OS, in one action. It is
automatic and no files or programs are missed.
