I'm assuming that you have your Install CD for Microsoft Office 97.
Microsoft set the Office 97 CDs up two different ways, with one it treated
the entire office suite as one install and with the other it treated each
app as a separate install. Regardless of which version you have, insert the
Office 97 CD, and either use the add/remove components feature, or install
PowerPoint (depending on the version). You may even have an option to repair
the office install. I'm not sure what you downloaded from the internet, but
PowerPoint for Office 97 can't be downloaded from Microsoft. You may have
downloaded a PowerPoint viewer. If so, then it's a newer version than your
Office 97. I'd check in control panel > add and remove programs to see if I
had indeed installed a PowerPoint viewer. You could then possibly change the
default file association for the .pps and .ppt files by right clicking on
them while holding down the shift key. This will bring up a menu that will
have the option for "Open With" select "Open With" and browse to the
PowerPoint Viewer, make sure that the check box "Always use this program to
open files of this type" is checked. Do one type of file at a time, do the
.pps and then go back and do the .ppt. don't try to do both at once.
On a side note; Office 97 is extremely outdated now, you could probably pick
up Office 2000 cheaply somewhere, while 2000 is outdated, it's not as bad as
97.

Subject: PowerPoint...not!!!

I recently had to have a computer techie come to my home to repair my
computer and then reinstall all my programs. I'm on Windows 98 SE. One of
the programs to be reinstalled was Microsoft Office 97. It wasn't until a
few days later that I noticed that I cannot open any .pps or .ppt
attachments in e-mail that I receive. I was able to do so before the
repair. I've tried to download PowerPoint from the Internet. The download
always tells me that it was successful...but it isn't. Any suggestions?
Thanks.
