It have both. Earlier version have settings for how often
it check for updates - IIRC it was every 3 hours by default.
Ver 4 don't have option to change settings but it still
checks virus database and program updates few
times in day at least.

What I don't like is that I lost systray icons after I installed
WinXP SP2.  don't know why because these icons
still have in other computer(s) and Avast is still running,
it stopped few viruses. To get Avast main program back
I need create shortcut to ashAvast.exe in desktop.
If You launch ashAvast and select Tools-Settings
You can see options for update in tree. Thought
 that you can update also manually.
