You are correct in your assumption about breaks. It breaks the page or the
single column. You can not break two columns together. The simplest way to
break up that monotony is insert some graphics into the page and let the
text wrap around the picture(s).
Your other alternative is to use something like Publisher which does allow
you to put part of the article on one page and the rest on a different
page -- just like a real newspaper does.
