Note that most (large) universities still offer (or require) Telnet, which
is typically accessed (through dial-up modem) using the web site or simply
launching Telnet software and pointing to the proper host. I have found
Telnet to be faster than internet for file transfers in many cases. The
educational accounts may also require Telnet for email or access files
residing on the mainframe. Applications are also accessible through Telnet.
More recent Telnet interface software allows cursor key usage (as opposed to
the traditional CTRL-K for up, et. al.). Corporations also have Telnet-only
mainframe apps. & info. in some cases.
