If you can remove all "networking" protocols etc. in "safe" mode. That
might be worth a try!
I've got an Aptiva and sometimes funny things happen.

That is the problem, I can't get into the properties at all....as soon
as I click
on it either on the desktop or from the control panel it locks up the
computer.
I would start by making note of any TCP/IP settings on the machine, then by
removing and then reinstalling all the network clients and protocals on the
machine.
