Trying to upgrade a client's Win 98 PC, but the Win XP installation keeps restarting during the entry of the CD Key number. Suspecting this might be related to a Windows problem he was already experiencing, I tried to run Norton Utilities "Win Doctor" from the CD I carry with me. But this program also keeps restarting without completing the diagnosis.

I'm inclined to suspect a flaky CD drive, since this sort of thing doesn't seem to happen when you run programs from his hard drive (although the machine does lock up frequently, which isn't unlike Win 98 behavior).  But I'm open to any other suggestions you may have.
