Al, I deliberately didn't go into the method of increasing the number of
available cabfile backups in my earlier message, as it would have increased
the size of an already lengthy post, and I figured most folk don't really
need to do it.

You asked why I do what I do - it's simple, really.

When I use my cleanup routine, I know that the newly created cabfile is as
correct, clean and up-to-date as I can make it. So if I label the file as
the .6th, 10th or whatever comes next in my sequence, I know that this last
numbered file contains all of my most recent settings, and was recorded
after a registry cleanup.

In theory, when I cause a new cabfile to be created, I can dump all the
earlier versions, ie the 1st, 2nd, 3rd etc. But in practice, and because
I'm lazy (which is why I evolved this system in the first place) I find it
easier to dump the earlier cabs every couple of weeks or so.

Like you, I used to keep a huge number of cabfile backups, but it dawned on
me that, apart from some being more recent than others, I had no way of
knowing if any were 'better' than others, ie if they were a more accurate
and a truer reflection of a tidied-up registry.

It actually takes much less time to do it, than it takes to write about it
:--))
