Judy, unless a reader has a simple solution, we'll need a lot more info.

What OS? Which version of IE? Dialup or broadband? Your experience level?

What happens if you just open IE and close it again without being on the
'net? Do you have your browser options set to close the browser when
leaving the internet---or vice versa? If so, try turning that option off
for starters.

Have you done full antivirus and antispyware checks with fully updated
security software? What are you running for these? Which firewall are you
using? When did this problem first occur, and can you relate it to recent
installation of any software or hardware?

Can you close the browser via Task Manager?

Have you tried a registry restore? System restore? Does it happen with an
alternative browser? (It's always a good idea to have at least one
alternative browser for troubleshooting of this nature)

Are there any other system problems?

Have you tried a IE repair as detailed in the last issue of this Digest by
Venkat in response to another reader?

My initial thought is that maybe IE is trying to access a memory address
which is being used or blocked by another program, possibly some invisible
spyware or trojan. Are you running anything of Nortons? That can be
overly invasive at times.

I suspect it may be one of those problems where there could be a plethora
of possible answers, depending on circumstances.
