Thank you so much to all everyone who tried to help! I hope those who responded see this message. Unfortunately in the end the only thing that brought the menu with all the toolbars back was to do a system restore thus the delay in replying to anyone. I am thankful that I had just finished saving all my important data on CD several hours before my computer went down. I ha been on several sites when a page that said ‘page cannot be displayed’ began loading over & over. I tried to stop it by pressing ctrl-alt-delete & ‘end task’. Then I got the error message about ‘A fatal exception had occurred’ when I pressed ‘any key to continue’ the screen went black & the words on the screen read ‘No operating system found on any devices’.  All works well now, but it was a time consuming procedure to restore & re-install. My compute
