From what I have always seen, the netscape address book is a specially
created "text" file that is created by netscape and gives a warning "not
to edit it". Not true if you are careful!

It has a html format so your client could attempt to open the file using
netscape File|Open file . . . command. If it hangs there, the odds are
that somehow the file got corrupted (probably near the end of the file)
and that is the problem. I've experienced the same thing with mail.

First, make a backup copy of the address book. Then using a text
editor, open the file. If you are careful and familiar with a little
simple html, you can look at the structure of the data and see if there
are any weird of missing data. Remember, in html, the statr of
something will have <x> and the end must have </x> or there is no way
for the program to know when the end of something has occurred.
