In theory, a machine that is only connected to the Internet for an
hour a day is only exposed to 1/24 (4%) as much hostile traffic as
one that is connected around the clock.
Realistically, that's more than enough. Going online via dial-up,
without some sort of protection, is playing "Russian Roulette".
