I agree with what you say about McAfee. It probably does the job well, but
is not well designed to set up properly, difficult for anyone other than
experienced to configure, and is too invasive for general home use in its
default settings.

For over a year now I've been using Kaspersky, which I've found excellent,
easy to set up the way you want it, and intuitive to update.

There is a European university (Heidelberg I think) which regularly does
independent testing of all anti-virus programs, including many I've never
heard of. I saw some extensive reports about 6 months ago. The tests are
very rigorous. Apparently the major a-v companies don't generally like to
publish the results, as they show up certain deficiencies in all current
versions. No a-v program is 100% perfect, even with updated data
files. The major big-names do not feature in the top 3 or 4, at least in
the reports I saw, which were the results of the previous 3 quarterly sets
of tests. I guess the differences would be fairly minor.

These reports don't seem to be available on the Net, as far as I can see. I
was told they are made available only to those companies participating in
testing, which seemed to include all the major, and many minor,
companies. Is anyone else familiar with them, or are they really an
industry secret?

Kaspersky features as one of the top-rated in these tests. I don't know its
price in USA. I've never needed to test its cleaning functions, as I just
remove any suspect attachments.
