See the following link for the "full" limitations of your drive:
http://www.teac.co.jp/dspd/product/optical/cd-w58e.html

SPECIFICATION: Drive 8X8X32

Recording Speed CD-R: 8X, 4x, 2x and 1X
                          CD-RW: 8X, 4x, 2x and 1X

It actually has four read speeds, depending on the disk type...
            32X Speed (CAV)
                CD-ROM (Mode 1)
                CD-ROM XA MODE2 (FORM 1)

             20X Speed (CAV) :
                 CD-RW

             20X Speed (CLV) :
                 CD-ROM XA Mode 2 (Form 2)
                 CD-DA(DAE)

             4X Speed (CLV) :
                 CD-DA

I do not know how CD-RW got into the thread...
I would not use them for anything I wanted to keep for more than
several weeks, (and not even then IMHO...)

You should be able to record CD-RWs at at least 4X, if your
computer can keep up. (More later.)
(I never saw any CD-RW disks between 4X and 10X, but maybe I
missed them...)

My reply "mostly" deals with a "side issue" of the original question...
I agree with Don, that if the burning software wants to spool the entire
CD contents to the Hard Drive there is little you can do except provide
the space for that section of the operation...
This could be caused by many things, like a computer that either "IS"
too slow, or one that is set up wrong or using the wrong IDE drivers,
or has DMA turned off (or on, if "required" that it be off...)
Burning Data at 8X should be fairly simple IF there are NOT tons of small files.
THIS is more than likely the CAUSE of your problem... Small files increase
access times and can cut burning speeds to 1/5 or 1/10 (?) of normal...

More "mixed in" further down...

From: "Don Weagant"

There are different limitations on CD-RW disks and you need special CD-RW
"high speed rated" media for this... The older ones are "locked" at 1X, 2X, 4X,
10X, 12x??? (there may be newer speeds out also, I never use CD-RWs...)
CD-Rs are different, see below...

It was pointed out to me on another list that the way the numbers are listed
is not a "standard"... I saw this is true, - depending on where you see the numbers..
(I would consider the way TDK lists them "standard" for me...)

The burn speed of the CD-RW is written on the "glass master" in the ATIP
information area. (You have to "trust" the stamping plant used the correct
"glass master" during the stamping process or the ATIP info is meaningless...)

Note that historically, CD-R disks did NOT include ANY information in the ATIP
area about max or min speed, and you (or your software) were required to
test the CD, and/or follow the rating on the BOX.
LATER, noticing there was a problem with "only" putting the rating on the BOX,
they started putting the rating printed on the face of the CD-R.
(CR-RWs limitations went unmarked for a long time too...)
It is "STILL" not in the ATIP area in any modern CD-R that I have tested.

Here is the "speed info" from a modern "free after rebate" 48X CD-R

    ATIP: 97m 26s 66f
    Disc Manufacturer: CMC Magnetics Corp.
Reflective layer: Dye (Short strategy; e.g. Phthalocyanine)
    Media type: CD-Recordable
Recording Speeds: min. unknown - max. unknown
    nominal Capacity: 702.83MB (79m 59s 73f / LBA: 359848)

This is an "Optimum" by K-Hypermedia (but really by CMC...)
