When you start Word, you probably prefer it to open in a certain way, ie with a certain font selected, in a particular page format etc etc.

These things are governed by your 'normal' or 'global' template, which has remembered the choices you've made and saved in the past.

If you elect to save further changes, the next new document you open will reflect those changes.
