I didn't know that there even is a 16 bit version of Winzip. Could
you give us the URL of the site which lists both?
A 16 bit program is one in which the basic unit of information
transfer is 16 bits. In a 32 bit program, it's 32 bits. In theory, if the
programs were otherwise identical, the 32 bit program should run
almost twice as fast if the hardware and software are both
optimized for 32 bits, since the 32 bit program can transfer data
twice as fast, but it doesn't really work that way for many reasons.
When running Win95 or later, and you have a choice between a 16
bit or a 32 bit version of the same program, always try the 32 bit
version first, unless you know that it has special problems. The 32
bit version will usually run faster, and since it often newer, it might
have more features and fewer bugs, and be more compatible with
modern systems. The 16 bit programs you find are often versions
which were written years ago for Windows 3.x and which haven't
been modified since.
