The windows shutdown troubleshooter has helped many people. Search for
"Shutdown" in Help and support.
I don't allow Norton products on my computers, especially System Works,
which causes many problems. I use AVG Free and have not had a virus of any
kind in years.
What do you mean by AOL TCP/IP? Is he on dialup?
It would be to your advantage to know the name and the basics of the Spyware
program, and to know what it's finding and what it's doing with the results.
Most of these programs have a log you can look at. The MS anti-Spyware beta
combined with Ad Aware and/or Spybot should be all most people need.

I have a new HP 519J, Pentium 4, 3.06 GHz, 512 MB memory, 200 GB drive,
running Windows XP Home. Installed are: Norton System Works 2005, a
SpyWare program (can't remember which one but it was installed at the
store), MS Office 2000. I use Incredimail for my Comcast Mail and my
husband uses AOL (TCP/IP). I run a scan weekly and several things have been
detected and either deleted or quarantined. My machine either won't shut
down at all or it takes at least 5 minutes to shut down so I know there is a
problem. Can someone please point me in the right direction to get this
2-1/2 week old PC back on track.
