Thanks to all but in particular Mark Rode and Rick Glazier. As mark
suggested, I did invest in a new SoundBlaster card (SB Live) and no more
problem.
Previous tracks recorded to the hard disk with the old SB Pro 16 played back
just fine with the new card installed. Conclusion is that the transfer of
audio data to the hard disk via the 16 bit card did not cause any problem
with the quality.
So I guess the hardware on the SB Pro 16 was defective only when it was the
exclusive "engine" used to generate sound when playing from the hard disk.
I'm of the opinion that if I had have transferred the tracks from the HDD to
a recordable CD, the defective audio would have also been transferred -
because of failure of some part of the SB Pro.
This forum shows its worth once more!
