Thanks Ben,

Although it was not the attributes, your suggestion got me to look at
the folder some more. Turns out that there was a file "desktop.ini" in
Favorites. The file contained only these statements:

[.ShellClassInfo]
CLSID={1A9BA3A0-143A-11CF-8350-444553540000}
[ExtShellFolderViews]
{5984FFE0-28D4-11CF-AE66-08002B2E1262}=%windir%\web\favorite.htm

Although these seem innocent enough, the presence of this ini file
caused my Favorites to disappear from view in my installation of IE5
beta. Removing desktop.ini from Favorites restored normal operation. The
problem was apparently caused by leftover hooks from my IE4 install.

I thought this information might be of some use to others. Incidentally,
I had to use WINFILE.EXE to access the contents of Favorites since
Explorer refused to open it!

I've seen this happen in Win95/98 when the Favorites folder loses its
system
attribute. In Win95/98 you can use Tweakui to repair system folders.
Don't
know about NT. Check your attributes.
