I thought I'd reply to my own query, since I managed to stumble
on to the solution for both myself and my client.  Also, it may
be quite possible that this problem could affect others with a
similar assortment of M$ software . . .

The root of the problem was the system file known as MAPI32.DLL.
When my client installed IE 5.0 Beta 2, the original
c:\windows\system\mapi32.dll was modified and its original
'configuration' (not being a programmer, I'm not sure of the term
for this) was saved in a folder called
c:\msoffice\office\outlook\backups\windows.  In my client's case,
he was able to restore the address book function to Word97's
'Tools-->Envelopes and labels' dialog by simply copying the
original version of mapi32.dll back to c:\windows\system.  (He
and I both noticed a huge size difference in the old vs. the new
mapi32.dll, which is what led to the solution.) I had to take a
few more steps, since my "original" mapi32.dll no longer existed.
On my Win95a machine, I used the extract command (within a
directory where I had copied all the files and cabs necessary to
install Win95) to extract the original mapi32.dll.  This was not
sufficiently recent to work with Word 7.0 in the manner described
above.  I then applied the exchange update, and this appeared to
make it work.  (It works at present, anyway.)

The pity of it is that the message that pops up when (in IE
4.01's version of Outlook Express) one checks "Make Outlook
Express my default Simple MAPI client" on the "Tools-->Options"
menu of OE states that the above impairment of function within
Word will occur, but will be restored when the check is cleared
and the machine is restarted.  Microsoft's knowledge base article
(Q178481 WD97: Errors Accessing the Address Book Icon.) basically
concurred, offering no further help.  Clearing the check mark on
the Options menu in OE did not clear up the problem.

To recap: When both my client and I lost the function of address
book under "Tools-->Envelopes and labels" in Word (7.0 and 97),
it was due to changes in the c:\windows\system\mapi32.dll file.
Replacing the changed file with the original (or slightly
updated, in the case of Win95a OS) file cleared up the problem.
As a sidebar, my client told me that, in his version of Outlook
Express, under "Tools-->Options" there was no check box to "Make
Outlook Express my Simple MAPI client".  I can only assume that,
in his case, either the installation of IE 5.0 B2 'redid' his
mapi32.dll or he checked "Make Outlook Express my default e-mail
client."

Hope this is of some value to someone.  This caused the two of us
no end of frustration.
