Thanks Ben, I found the answer by experimenting.

Opera doesn't like to import a whole bunch of unsorted Favorites.  Normally,
mine are pretty tidy but this time I had 135 that hadn't been assigned to
folders.

All I had to do was tuck them away in a new folder and the import worked
fine, plus they're now available from Bookmarks on the menu bar.

Incidentally, for anyone thinking of trying Opera, it is quite a good
application - I'm more impressed the longer I use it.

It apparently has a built-in pop-up stopper, which I haven't used yet, but
one useful feature I HAVE tried is the built-in download manager. This
facility will resume broken downloads, as long as the site supports it.
