Alex,
This really depends on the purpose of your graphic. If you are going to be using them for banners,
buttons, or logos, I would recommend using the gif format. If you are showcasing the quality of a
photograph or a logo with more than 256 colors, I would recommend a jpg.
The primary advantage to gifs is that they take up less memory than jgps (on average). Also, gifs can
contain transparent inks and can be looped an animated in a single file. The primary disadvantage is that
they are limited to a 256 color palette.
The primary advantage to jpgs is that they produce a quality image with an extremely large range of
colors (16 million, I think). On the other hand, they take up more memory (and thus, produce longer
download times) and cannot be animated without using scripting or Java.
