There are a lot of warnings about this feature, but I keep my Anti-virus up
to date and have all the patches and updates, so I don't worry about it. I
get over a hundred messages a day (Not counting spam) and AVG has blocked
several viruses. I have never had a virus infection.
Incidentally, I have found Outlook very effective at blocking Spam by using
the junk senders list. I rarely get more than one or two per day.

You don't want it back! The preview pane automatically opens the message--if
it happens to contain a virus, you will infect your computer.
If you insist on having it, go to View and click on Preview Pane. This is a
toggle.
