Must confess that I haven't been following this thread too closely but has
anyone suggested 'WORDPAD' that comes bundled with WIN95 and WIN98?

It's also in XP.

Here's a description I just clipped from the 'About' menu item from Wordpad
which - along with Notepad - is found in XP's Start/All Programs/Accessories
menu.

WordPad overview

With WordPad, you can create and edit simple text documents or documents
with complex formatting and graphics. You can link or embed information from
other documents into a WordPad document.

You can save your WordPad file as a text file, rich text file, text file for
MS-DOS, or Unicode. These formats provide greater flexibility when working
with other programs. Documents that use multiple languages should be saved
as rich text files.

I just tried it again now to make sure it does so and was able to apply
boldface, underline and italics.
