There are at least three basic types of free Email.

Juno (only one I know): Does not require internet access to work. But it
does not receive attachments and has a good bit of sign-on advertising to
get through to get to your mail. My wife and daughter use it tho' and
don't mind. Very simple to use.

Browser Email: This includes Hotmail, Yahoo, Bigfoot, and many, many
others. You use a standard browser to get to your Email. You must be on
the net first so you have to be able to dial in using an ISP or be on the
internet somehow. With most you can receive a limited size attachments.

Pop Mail: This is of the type that your ISP usually provides and you access
your mail using a popmail reader such as Eudora, Outlook, Netscape Mail,
etc. Free services are provided by such companies at
http://www.crosswinds.net, http://www.freestamp.com,
http://www.geocities.com, http://www.pemail.com. With most you can receive
a limited size attachments. Some also allow your own homepage.

Another free type which is bundled with free internet access is both a free
Email and free ISP provided by companies such as Netzero
(http:www.netzero.net) and Tridium (http:www.tridium.net). To access Email
you must use a popmail reader. Usually have a limit on the amount of space
you can have on their servers, homepage and Email combined.
