Kenneth,

Your problem is a common one, you have things running in the background
such as; screen saver, antivirus checker, etc.

What you have to do is shut down any program that is running. There are
many free programs that will do this for you [End It All is a good one]..

However, I have found the easiest way, is to reboot into Safe Mode
[which won't open these types of programs] and do you scan and defrag.

When you are finished, simply reboot back into normal mode. Works like a
charm. I have been doing it for years.

Good luck.

to do a scan disk. When I try to do a scan disk I get a message saying
the
computer has tried 10 times but was unable to finish it due to other
programs, probably Windows, running in the background. I always close
programs on my toolbar like ICQ, dunce, Norton, etc but still can't seem
to
get past the glitch. Can you help?
